Verify after downloading:

Type Other Linux (64-bit), 1024 MB RAM or more, no disk needed for a live session.
Settings → Storage → optical drive → choose the downloaded ISO.
It boots straight to the desktop.
Guest type Other Linux 5.x kernel 64-bit, 1024 MB RAM or more.
VM settings → CD/DVD → use ISO image, and keep “connect at power on” checked.
If another OS is installed on the VM disk, add bios.bootOrder = "cdrom"
to the .vmx, or press F2 at power-on.

buildroot login: instead of the desktopThe ISO was not attached or booted (often an unconnected virtual optical drive, or the VM booted from its disk).
The compositor follows the real framebuffer mode and logs the probe result to the serial port. Standard VGA/SVGA adapters work; 1280×800 looks best.
Redirect the serial port to a file (VirtualBox: serial port → host pipe/file; VMware: serial0.fileName).
Settings → Input → mouse speed (slow / standard / fast). Default is 1:1 and applies immediately.
